Hello folks
at the recent HER Forum I mentioned a project by EDINA, but got the name wrong. The relevant project is GeoXWalk
For those not there, in a nutshell this project aims to make documentary indexes searchable geographically, involving some sort of gazetteer interface. So for example, as I understand it, the project aims to search documents to find e.g. parish names, and then links this to a search capability which looks at e.g. postcodes, and then finds the overlap between the postcodes and parishes and gives a list of relevant documents. As most of our data requests are geographic based, this struck me as being useful, in terms of a joint search allowing people to find the archaeology and other related documents at the e.g. CRO. In the long term anyway....
Anyway, website details are http://hds.essex.ac.uk/geo-X-walk/ . I have been in touch with the guy and though this is JISC funded and therefore aimed at HE/FE he seemed keen to chat to us about it (though I was only really data gathering).
peruse at your leisure
Merry Xmas
best wishes
