I have to agree with John - it seems a sensible idea to at least explore the
possibility of using video-conferencing. I would love to be able to justify
spending a couple of days in Scotland or anywhere else for that matter, but
the reality of the situation is that it is simply not possible, especially
as my manager is due to retire shortly and no one else will be in post for a
while. The other solutions seem to be either rotating the meetings around
the country, so that most people should be able to get to at least one a
year, or having more discussions on-line.

Personally, I quite like the idea of being virtually in Scotland!

Martin,

You have seen the correspondence. I agree with you about professional
development and so on, but really there is absolutely no way that my
employer is going to fund this for a moment, even if we could justify
several days out of the office, so please let's be realistic. Even for
those in SW England, or the English midlands it can clearly be a problem
getting to meetings.

Please let's have much more of this done on-line, as has been suggested.
But I also return to my previous proposal:
Increasingly, organisations have access to videoconferencing facilities.
Could you not circulate meetings around the UK and enable a
videoconferencing link that could bring in people who couldn't otherwise
make it?

Then those in Cornwall could enjoy at least a virtual presence in
Shetland ( and vice versa)

Thanks all for your replies both on and off list. Its clear I'll never
please everyone with the venue or timing of these meetings. Most
responses have been from people who have attended meetings if not
necessarily thins one, id be very interested to hear from those who
rarely or never attend. I think sending a representative to at least one
of the two meetings every year should be seen as an essential for the
management of every SMR/HER/UAD. I don't consider that this is an
unreasonable thing to suggest as it is important to bring the sector
together to discus issues and hear presentations on recent developments,
initiatives etc. Also the meetings should be seen as something which
contributes to individuals CPD, I'm sure that all the employers of HER
staff have a commitment to some form of CPD.
