LabCulture 2003/04
PVA MediaLab is pleased to announce guidelines for the next round of
the LabCulture Residency Programme.
The week long labs offer artists an intensive period to engage with new
tools and work within a critical environment. The focus is on
production of new material and time out from regular work. Artists have
time to experiment with new ways of working, to practically research or
take an idea further, or to pursue their creative process without the
pressure of having to realise a final outcome.
The scheme is open to artists based in the UK.
LabCulture offers artists from a wide range of disciplines the
opportunity to develop new work and enhance skills. The programme is
developed through active partnerships with UK arts organisations and
aims to stimulate diverse practice and collaboration.
Places offered cover full board but do not include travel to and from
the host venues.
In 2003/2004 the LabCulture scheme has been developed to provide both
ACCESS and PRODUCTION labs. LabCulture artist facilitators support
practitioners throughout the labs, enabling a wide range of media and
approaches to be addressed.
Each ACCESS lab is based on our tried and trusted format which
introduces key tools to artists and encourages a new pilot project to
be made within an intensive week.
The PRODUCTION labs focus on research and development of a new work.
Experienced new media practitioners and facilitators work with
residents, giving access to digital video, digital audio production,
web development, interactivity and DVD authoring, developing ideas and
supporting collaborative practice.
HOW TO APPLY
Labculture is open submission. We encourage applications from artists
and creatives operating across the cultural industries spectrum whose
work pushes the boundaries of contemporary artistic practice. In
particular we welcome applications from musicians, writers, dancers and
innovative artists beyond categorisation and all spaces in between.
For ACCESS labs send a letter of application on one sheet of A4
outlining ideas that you would like to explore.
For PRODUCTION labs send a proposal (A4) for a project that you would
like to develop.
IMPORTANT ADDENDUM - Artists who have attended LabCulture previously
may now apply for the Production programme. We have recognised that in
some cases this may support a progression of a project or idea. Please
note that those applying will be part of the normal open submission
process and we cannot guarantee places specific to locations of labs.
If you have been successful in attending LabCulture before you will not
be considered for the access programme.
Please supply 2 paper copies of your application. Supporting materials
may be sent as VHS/mini DV/DVD/Hi8/CD/DVDrom/URL/35mm slides but do not
send original works. Please enclose an SAE if you want your materials
returned. We do not accept electronic (email) applications.
A selection panel views all work and shortlists from the overall
submission. Please note that we do not enter into subsequent
discussions after the panel has made its decisions due to the number of
applications received.
We do not accept group or team applications.
Applications should be received no later than 5 p.m. on Friday 30
January 2004. Panel meets first week of February 2004 and selected
artists will be contacted shortly after that.
Please check that you have enclosed the following:

ACCESS PROGRAMME
The LabCulture access programme is designed for artists to work within
a supported atmosphere over one week. The Labs are fully residential
offering intensive engagement with creative technology. Previous
experience is not necessary, although a basic IT literacy is useful.
Access Labs work to a schedule introducing key tools such as ProTools
(for sound), Final Cut Pro (for video), Flash (for animation) and
Studio Pro (for DVD). Selected artists work alongside experienced
artist facilitators to gain insights into how to integrate and
use these tools for project development.
PRODUCTION PROGRAMME
The LabCulture Production programme is designed for artists who wish to
develop a more advanced project. Production Labs have a loose schedule
within which projects are developed. Collaboration and crossover is
encouraged.
Production Labs are fully residential offering research and development
time over one week. These labs are not suitable for those who do not
already have experience of new media tools.
MORE
During each lab artists are invited to present their work and engage in
discussion about their practice. Guest speakers are also invited to
attend and present their work. The intention is to create a critical
and supportive environment.
At the end of each lab artists present their work to an invited
audience. In previous years pilot projects have been developed with a
variety of media including surround sound, dance for film, animation,
video, music, web sites, installations, projections, performances,
documentation projects and broadband content. Collaboration is
encouraged and in prior years long term creative partnerships have
developed.
Artists from all disciplines can apply. LabCulture residencies cover
food and accommodation for one week but not travel to the host venue.
Fees are not payable for these labs.
