medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Tom (if I may go to first names),
I'd recommend using the new Maggioni edition on CD-Rom if you can get it, so that you can try a computer search. (George Ferzoco just beat me to this answer, I see!) It's also the closest thing ever done to a critical edition of the Legenda, based on the manuscripts. (I believe the Dunn-Lardeau edition is based on an early printed edition from France.)
As for my book, your praise has brightened up my whole day; but I can't claim to have given a comprehensive list there of all the Legenda's references to Jews. Nor do I know as much as I should about the larger issue of saints' relationships with Jews. One recent book that may be helpful to you is Miri Rubin's *Gentile Tales* [at least, I think that's the title]. . . which I haven't yet managed to get my hands on, but have heard discussed in a fascinating conference paper about late-medieval uses of Mary as a vengeful protector of Christianity against Jews and heretics. Another place to look might be the fairly extensive bibliography on Chaucer's Prioress's Tale, a Marian miracle story which is anti-Semitic enough to have spurred a lot of Chaucer scholars to look into the awful history of the ritual-murder libel and other analogues in medieval writings about saints, and sometimes to set these against relatively *positive* treatments of the Jews in other Christian literature
of the period.
with best wishes,
Sherry
