Grid GIS workshop: "GridGIS - Setting the Agenda"
15-16 Dec 2004
Co-hosted by the National Institute for Environmental eScience (NIEeS) at
the University of Cambridge and EDINA, the UK National Data Centre based
at the University of Edinburgh, this workshop aims to bring together
representatives from the eScience and the Geographic Information Science
(GIS) communities. The goal is to identify areas of overlapping interest
and discuss how the two communities may most effectively collaborate in
the future. Attendees should be experienced in one or both fields and be
willing to actively participate in discussion.
The workshop will take place at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences,
University of Cambridge on the 15th December 2003
In the morning, briefings from both the GIS and eScience perspective will
provide background and insight into the current state of play. Speakers
will include:
- Prof Peter Fisher, University of Leicester, introducing GIS/Grid and
asking "What are the big problems".
- Jonathan Giddy (Welsh eScience Centre). What Grid can do that may be of
interest to GIS people.
- Dr Mike Mineter, University of Edinburgh. Some history of GIS and High
Performance Computing.
- Allan Doyle, NASA/International Interfaces. Recent developments in the
area of Open GIS Consortium (OGC) services, Earth Observation and Grid.
The afternoon will consist of a number of case studies, breakout sessions
to discuss key topics that emerged in the morning followed by an open
forum to summarise the day and to discuss where we go next.
Facilities are available on the morning of Tuesday the 16th for those who
wish to meet in small groups to continue discussion on specific issues or
to hold related meetings.
