Judith
I've recently been going through the collection of battle plans which F W
Stubbs elicited from fellow officers for his compilation of the three-volume
History of the Bengal Artillery in the 1870s-1890s. No two people ever
recollect a battle, such as Punniar or Sobraon in India in the 1840s and
1850s, in the same way, and it was curious to me to see Stubbs' method. He
invited all the leading officers to make a pen sketch on letter paper of the
order and progress of the battle, as each perceived it. Then he tried to
establish a common plan. Quite a task of graphic documentary analysis. And
India Office Records has his large album with dozens of such plans for India
battles in the 1840s and 1850s. I'd be glad to show your student if he/she
is interested.

Subject: battle plans
I've just had a question which is completely out of my field of
knowledge, so I hope I can draw on all you experts out there!
A student is writing a dissertation on 17th & 18th century battle plans
(there is a collection in the Typography Department here) and wants some
literature/background. I have only found very general info. Has anyone
any pointers?
