The International Institute for the Study of Culture and Education (IISCE)
is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, affiliated with a
private college in south-eastern Poland - the University of Lower Silesia of
the Association for the Advancement of Education (DSWE TWP). Located in
Wroclaw, the center of academic and cultural life in the region of Lower
Silesia, DSWE TWP is a dynamic private institution of higher education
dedicated to supporting novel approaches to learning. Through its unique
connection to the Association for the Advancement of Education (TWP), the
University of Lower Silesia (DSWE) combines academic education and research
with a strong commitment to the dissemination of knowledge to non-academic
sectors of Polish population.
Our Mission
We seek to establish an international network of academics, non-profit
practitioners, and teachers who collaborate across disciplinary,
professional, and national boundaries to foster the culture of pluralism and
diversity that is critical to participative democracy and a thriving civil
society in east-central Europe. Through its fellowships, trainings,
seminars, conferences, publications and grant programs IISCE aims to bring
together a unique constellation of educational professionals and public
actors and together with them work toward bridging the gaps dividing the
academic network and educational practice. By nurturing collaborative
ethnographic inquiry on the graduate level, moreover, our program will lay
the foundations of a network of junior academics whose work will serve as a
resource to educational practitioners in the field.
Objectives
The work of IISCE holds three key objectives:
1) to strengthen pluralistic democratic culture and civil society in East
and Central Europe;
2) to promote international collaboration between scholars and practitioners
from Eastern Europe and other parts of the world in the area of research and
education;
3) to systematically work toward bridging the gap dividing the academic
sphere and educational practice.
We seek to achieve these goals:
by supporting international collaborative research on issues critical to the
fostering of pluralistic democratic culture in the region;
by organizing both academic and public discussions on these issues;
by disseminating the results of research and debates and related
information;
by organizing and supporting outreach programs to teachers and schools in
order to implement ideas and knowledge of pluralism and cultural
understanding in educational programs and school and university curricula in
the region;
by building a network of academics, educational professionals,
non-governmental and governmental agents concerned with supporting the
culture of pluralism and democracy in the region and beyond.
Website
An important feature of the work of IISCE is an interactive website. The
website is divided into several sections, which include both generally
accessible public part and several private password-protected sites.
• The public site, accessible to all visitors, includes information about
IISCE and its past, present and future activities and links to other
internet locations pertaining to IISCE’s focus. In addition, it will soon
include an interactive component, which will serve as a forum for the
exchange of ideas and opinions not only among the participants of our
programs, but for the larger professional public. The public part of the
website also include a Curriculum Resource Center, a place for the exchange
of syllabi and ideas about new methods and educational strategies.
