thanks for your comments. I am using the word 'accessible' to mean in a
format that is accessible no matter what user agent or browser you have
(see W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). So the problem I have
is that images of text cannot be read by say, a screen reader, and
anyway, even an OCR will not make sense of an image of mathematical
symbolism, for example. So I am suggesting that if something that is
meant to be read is marked as type=genre, then the purpose of the image
is clear, and applications made to look for a mismatch between this and
the format of the object will know to do something to replace the
object.
I don't know how often people bother to use the type element?
I am not sure what your second question means???
