CALL FOR PAPERS
The 7th International Working Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces
(AVI 2004) will be held in Gallipoli (Lecce), Italy, May 25-28, 2004. The
Conference traditionally brings together experts in different areas of
computer
science who have a common interest in the conception, design and
implementation
of visual interfaces. Because of the new class of computers, such as digital
assistants, palmtops and mobile phones, AVI opens to perceptual interfaces,
not limited to the use of visual techniques, which appear the appropriate
solution to the design of dedicated interfaces, optimised for a given
hardware and/or specific applications. Both formal methods and concrete
applications well fit in the conference, whose program also includes invited
talks, given by leaders in the field.

PAPER SUBMISSION
We strongly encourage submissions that address research and development on
the
above and other related topics, or that propose new approaches suitable for
fulfilling the demands that characterize advanced interfaces of the next
generation. Three kinds of contribution are solicited: RESEARCH papers, up
to
8000 words (approximately 20 double-spaced pages including figures), SHORT
papers describing promising work in progress, up to 4000 words
(approximately
10 double-spaced pages including figures), and SYSTEM papers up to 4000
words. System papers will be accompanied by a demonstration of the software
prototype and should include a detailed project/system description
specifying
hw/sw requirements (demonstrators may either use personal laptops, or
provide
a full working version of accepted prototypes - available for installation -
by
April 16, 2004). Papers are submitted electronically. Detailed information
on
electronic submission will be provided at the AVI 2004 web site. Authors
intending to submit a paper MUST first send an electronic abstract of no
more than 250 words by filling in the abstract submission form that provided
at the AVI 2004 web site (abstracts are intended for classification purposes
only and must be followed by the paper).
PANEL, TUTORIAL, AND WORKSHOP PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
Panels - The aim of panels is to stimulate the discussion, so they
should address exciting, hot, and controversial topics rather than being
short
paper sessions. The panel proposal should include a 1000 word abstract,
which
illustrates the panel topic, stating compelling issues to be debated,
and a list of all panel members.
Tutorials - Tutorials provide conference participants with the opportunity
to gain new insights in the area of advanced visual interfaces. The up to
two page tutorial proposal should clearly state the content, organization,
and target audience of the tutorial. A/V requirements and a biosketch of the
presenter(s) should also be provided.
Workshops - The objective of the pre-AVI workshops is to focus on special
topics of major importance. The up to 1000 word proposal should state the
objective and significance of the workshop, potential participants, format
and duration of the workshop.
DEMO SUBMISSION
The Exhibit Program will primarily consist of demonstrations of software
prototypes. The demo proposal should include a detailed project/system
description of up to 3000 words (specifying hw/sw requirements). A full
working version of accepted prototypes must be available for installation by
April 16, 2004.

Papers and Demo descriptions presented at the Conference will be
included in the Proceedings published by ACM Press.
VENUE: Gallipoli is a well-known ancient town in Southern Italy and a
beach resort on the Ionian coast of Salento. Its name derives from the Greek
"kalle polis" which means "beautiful town". It is composed of two different
areas: the modern one situated on a promontory, and the other one, which is
a
colourful medieval village, built on a little island extending into the
Ionian
Sea, where there are several churches and a little museum in the maze of
narrow
streets. The Angioin castle dominates the island. The conference will be
held at
the Grand Hotel Costa Brada, located along the sandy shores of Gallipoli.
The airport closest to Gallipoli is Brindisi airport. Shuttles will be
provided by the conference organization from Brindisi airport and from Lecce
train station.
