medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. October) is the feast day of:
Ptolemy, Lucius, and companion (d. c. 165) We have an account of this
martyrdom from a contemporary, Justin Martyr. He tells that Ptolemy was a
Roman who was sentenced to death when caught instructing a woman in
Christianity. Lucius and an unnamed man protested against the injustice of
the sentence and were also executed.
Ethbin (d. c. 600) A well-travelled Celtic saint of uncertain provenance,
Ethbin was according to legend from Britain. He was educated in Brittany
by St. Samson and became a monk at Taurac. When the community was
dispersed after a Frankish raid, E. went to Ireland and became a hermit.
Aquilinus of Evreux (d. 695) Aquilinus was a Frank of Bayeaux, a soldier
for forty years. Then he and his wife agreed to spend their lives in works
of charity. They moved to Evreux, where A. soon became bishop.
Theofrid of Carmery (d. 728) Theofrid was a native of Orange who became
abbot of Carmery-en-Velay near Le Puy. He was mortally wounded in an Arab
raid and is regarded as a martyr. The monastery was renamed St. Chaffre
after him.
Frideswide (d. c. 735) A 12th-century vita tells that Frideswide was the
daughter of a Saxon ruler, who founded a convent for her on the site of
what is now Christ Church, Oxford. She is patron of the city and
university of Oxford.
Laura of Cordoba (d. 864) According to a popular but probably fictional
biography, Laura was a widow of Cordoba who became a nun and then abbess at
Cuteclara, and ended up boiled in pitch by the Muslim authorities.
Ednot (d. 1016) Ednot was a mon of Worcester and a disciple of St. Oswald.
He became abbot of Ramsey and bishop of Dorchester in 1006. He was killed
in a Danish raid.
