medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. October) is the feast day of:
Narcissus of Jerusalem (d. c. 222) Narcissus was a Greek. He became
bishop of Jerusalem as an old man. N's episcopate was troubled by the
first Easter controversy---he supported the Alexandrian mode of computing
the date of Easter against the earlier system that linked Easter to
Passover. His enemies were so outraged that he was calumniated, forced to
resign, and apparently became a hermit. However, he was later able to
return, and was bishop again when he died.
Zenobius of Antioch (d. 310) Zenobius, despite his name, was from Sidon
(Lebanon). He was a priest and physician, caught in Diocletian's
persecution and tortured with iron hooks, from which injuries he later
died.
Theodore of Vienne (d. c. 575) Theodore was a disciple of St. Caesarius of
Arles. He was abbot of one of the monasteries of Vienne, and founded
several more monasteries before retiring at the end of his life to become a
hermit.
Colman Macduagh (d. c. 632) One of the many saintly Colmans of Ireland,
Colman Macduagh was a nobleman who became a hermit on Arranmore Island (Co.
Donegal) and also at Burren (Co. Clare). Eventually he founded the
monastery of Kilmacduagh (Co. Galway), serving as both abbot and bishop.
Paula of Montaldo (blessed) (d. 1514) Paula was a native of Montaldo (near
Mantua). She joined the Poor Clares at a young age, and ended up serving
as abbess three times. Her reputation for sanctity is based on her fame as
a mystic.
