Hi
As the Convenor of FISH I can confirm MIDAS 2 is going ahead and the
work to decide what will go into it will be done next year mid 2004.
I cannot really speak for the committee members but I do not see why we
should not consider this for inclusion .. so in principle yes I think we
should at least consider this for inclusion. I cannot really say if it
would be included as we have no detail at present ... I think the
content, scope etc need to be very clearly developed before any
development or decision can be made.

I agree with Ingrid that there are clearly 2 issues here:
Developing MIDAS/Thesauri sufficiently to cope adequately with
palaeoenvironmental data; as well as the database HBSMR development
issues.
I think we should have a clear steer from Data standards/FISH colleagues
on
whether or not they are prepared to take this on board in principal
before we
go down the route that Crispin suggests of developing a new module for
HBSMR.
I would be happy to be involved with Dominique's working party (like
Ben,
probably by e-mail), but only if MIDAS/FISH and those responsible for
the
Thesauri are prepared to take this seriously and there's backing from
the SMR
community to take it forward!
In terms of recording period, when we migrated to HBSMR I insisted on
retaining Pleistocene as a period term. We also had all the main Pollen
Zones as terms within our old database. I still have the ability to
record
these in a User defined field and can search for them using adhoc
queries.
