Envisaging Heaven in the Middle Ages: An Interdisciplinary Conference
16-18 July 2004
Clifton Hill House, University of Bristol, UK
Plenary speakers: Professor Bernard McGinn (Divinity School, University
of Chicago), Professor Barbara Newman (English and Religion,
Northwestern University).
This Conference is devoted to issues concerning the representations and
functions of heaven in medieval art, literature, popular and academic
thought.
We invite offers of papers on a range of questions, for example:
-How did medieval artists and thinkers envisage heaven?
-What imaginative and material resources did representations of heaven
draw upon?
-What is the relationship between the ideals of heaven and the realities
of earth?
-What is the logic or ideological motivation behind medieval
representations of heaven?
-What functions did heaven perform in mystical and popular thought?
-How and why did representations of heaven change in the medieval
period?
-How are heavenly motifs appropriated and adapted in other contexts?
If you would like to offer a paper, please submit a short abstract
before 12th January 2004 to one of the organisers:
