URBAN MINDSCAPES OF EUROPE - FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
A One-Day Conference
at De Montfort University, Leicester, 29th April 2004
Organised by the Modern Languages Section of the School of Historical
and International Studies and by the International Cultural Planning
and Policy Unit (ICPPU), Faculty of Humanities De Montfort University,
Leicester
From Babylon to Brazilia, from the satires of Juvenal to Metropolis and
beyond, the city has occupied a key place as a literary and cultural
topos. We invite proposals from colleagues working in any discipline
within the humanities for papers of a maximum of 30 minutes which
investigate (within a specifically European context) the nature and
role of the city as a mindscape and as a cultural text. This would
include the examination of city images and identities in literature,
music, cinema, the visual arts, mythology, sports, humor and other
aspects of popular culture. Our intention is that the conference should
be as wide-ranging as possible, to allow the examination of the city
from many perspectives. Papers examining the uses of cultural images in
city marketing, urban policy, or the construction of the cultural
identities of European cities will also be welcome, as will
contributors dealing with the political/ideological management of city
images. It is expected that selected papers from the conference will
be published.
Proposals for papers (300 words maximum) should be sent by 24th October
2003 to
