2nd Conference Announcement:
"Making the Means Transparent: research methodologies in archaeological
heritage studies"
Cambridge, 22nd to 24th March 2004
Organisers:
Dr John Carman & Dr Marie Louise Stig Sĝrensen,
Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge
This interdisciplinary and international conference will consider how
different methods are used to arrive at our understanding of the phenomenon
of 'heritage', and how different interpretations may be constructed from
the same data. As more mature and diversified studies of heritage emerge it
is becoming ever more important that the means through which we gain our
insights are made explicit and open to scrutiny.
The conference aims to clarify what we recognise as data and which methods
we may bring to bear in their analysis. The methods to be considered range
from 'techniques' such as interviews, questionnaires, participant
observation, text analysis and 'people watching', and papers will debate
the role and form these methods must take when applied to the investigation
of the various dimensions of heritage.
