I tend to agree with you David in terms of political control. The BBC idea
is interesting (British Archaeology Corporation?).

Disagree about state run archaeology unit. There would be too much
political control, can you imagine what would be the result if there was a
conflict of interest if an important find was made in the path of a large
capital construction project? There wouldn't be even a rescue survey done!
A single U.K. archaeology service would be a good solution. However it
would have to be run as a public corporation, something on the lines of the
B.B.C. and funded as a charity from non state sources!
