Organized Session(s): City, Urbanism, and the European Region
Co-organizers: David Prytherch (Miami University), Josep Vicent Boira
(Universitat de València), and Antoni Dura (Universitat Autònoma de
Barcelona)
Abstract:
Amid the dramatic transformations of economic globalization and political
integration, a new 'Europe of the Regions' is said to be emerging. The
redrawing or reterritorialization of the European map has become the focus
of intense debate, among regional political leaders as well as scholars.
In particular, recent work on the politics of scale, the entrepreneurial
city-region, and 'new regionalism' has explored the relationship between
territorial restructuring, urban planning, and regional politics. The
planning of the European city, particularly the regional capital, is
clearly linked to the remaking of European politics and territory. But
important questions remain about the place of the city and its planning in
this transformation. What is the role of urbanism in the construction of
the European region? What is the role of regionalism in the construction
of the European city? In what ways do the cultural politics of region
intersect with the economic imperatives behind urban planning and
redevelopment? In this session, participants will explore the complexities
-- past, present, and future -- of urban politics and planning in an
increasingly regionalized Europe.
