Apologies for cross-posting...

The JISC-funded PORTAL project is pleased to announce the availability
of a new discussion paper.

"Describing External Resources for use within Institutional Portals" by
Liz Pearce is available for download from
http://www.fair-portal.hull.ac.uk/WP9.html.

In recent months, there has been much discussion in various places
about the extent to which classification schemes such as the Joint
Academic Coding Scheme (JACS) used by UCAS and HESA or the
Classification developed for learndirect might be used in order to
bring library and other resources to the attention of staff and
students within institutions.

This document explores both the JACS codes and the learndirect subject
classification scheme. It is not intended as a detailed report on the
use of the schemes but rather as a discussion document which raises
some of the issues involved in deploying the schemes for use within
institutional portals.

The PORTAL project will be moving forward to explore a number of the
issues outlined in more detail, and would welcome comments and input
from other practitioners at this stage, in order to ensure that the
final result is of maximum utility to the broader community.

The Presenting natiOnal Resources To Audiences Locally (PORTAL) Project
is funded under the FAIR Programme of the Joint Information Systems
Committee, and is a collaboration between the e-Services Integration
Group at the University of Hull and UKOLN.

Liz Pearce, author of this and several other PORTAL Project
deliverables, leaves the project at the end of this month to take up a
new post in Sheffield. Those who have benefited from her excellent set
of documents would, I am sure, wish to join with those of us on the
project in wishing her all the best in her new role.

Paul
