The European Library (TEL) Newsletter
September 2003
News about the project "The European Library (TEL) - The Gate to Europe's
Knowledge" (www.europeanlibrary.org)
Reports on digital depositing among European publishers and on metadata, the
factsheet on the TEL portal solution and a presentation about the TEL and
the MACS projects are now available!
The Report on current practices among publishers regarding the deposit of
digital publications (<http://www.europeanlibrary.org/pdf/tel_d1.2v1.0.pdf>)
is the second deliverable of work package 1 "Publisher relations" of the TEL
project which deals with the relations between deposit libraries and
publishers concerning the deposit of digital documents in the European
Library. The goals of WP1 are to review current publisher statuses and
relations, and electronic legal deposit statuses, to achieve joint
understandings and common approaches between partners, and to achieve key
operational understandings with important publishers and publisher
organisations. This report presents the results of a questionnaire on
digital depositing among European publishers.
The core of the report Metadata - Review of current practices and state of
the art (<http://www.europeanlibrary.org/pdf/tel_d3.1v1.0.pdf>) consists of
an analysis of responses to a questionnaire which deals with various aspects
of metadata, such as terminology, creation, availability, exchangeability
and linking mechanisms. This analysis is matched with findings from the desk
research which results in numerous recommendations. The report concludes
with various issues that need to be dealt with before a common metadata
model for TEL can be identified.
The aim of the Report on functionality of TEL metadata
(<http://www.europeanlibrary.org/pdf/tel_d3.2v1.0.pdf>) is to analyse the
expected TEL functionality and services in order to create a TEL data model.
Further, the TEL metadata registry is introduced as a mechanism for a
controlled evolution of the TEL Application Profile.
The TEL project group thinks about SRU as portal solution: Search and
retrieve via URLs which is briefly introduced on a factsheet
(<http://www.europeanlibrary.org/pdf/srusheet.pdf>).
National libraries are seeking to establish themselves as access points for
information, nationally and internationally. TEL and the MACS project
(Multilingual access to subjects) are examples of how this may be achieved.
Both projects were presented at IFLA: National libraries as access points:
The role of TEL and MACS
(<http://www.europeanlibrary.org/pdf/tel_scnl_clavel_eng.pdf>).
These reports are now available on the project website
www.europeanlibrary.org, there Results -> September 2003,
the presentation is available on the project website
www.europeanlibrary.org, there Related actions -> August 2003.
