medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. August) is the feast day of:
Euplus (d. 304) The subject of a contemporary
hagiographical account,
Euplus was an ordinary citizen of Catania, Sicily.
A copy of the gospels
was found in his possession---against Dioletian's
edict of persecution. E.
was tortured in an attempt to get him to apostacize,
then executed.
Gracilian and Felicissima (d. c. 304) Legend tells
that Gracilian was in
prison at Falerna awaiting execution; Felicissima
was a blind girl---healed
by G. and thus converted to Christianity. They were
beheaded together.
Muredach (Murtagh) (6th cent.?) Legend makes
Muredach a disciple of St.
Patrick and first bishop of Killala (Co. Mayo,
Ireland). Variant
traditions have him become a hermit on Inishmurry or
associated with
ColumCille on Iona (which would make him *very*
long-lived.
Porcarius and companions (d. c. 732) Porcarius was
abbot of Lerins, off
the coast of Provence. He and his entire community
were massacred by
Muslim pirates, who burned the monastery and
remained in possession of the
island for the following two centuries. The number
of the dead (including
the entire monastic familia, not just monks) is
supposed to have been five
hundred. The only ones to escape were some boys and
young monks, sent to
the mainland for safety.
