DANNER's and all Disabled People's Movement in U.K and global world...
I have received the following email through the Disability research site at:-
[log in to unmask], from Jules, Leeds, in response to the following questions from Mariab....
Mariab asked:
"Issues of disability and globalization were missing. Do these get names and anywhere except Europe? (I'm saying Europe, not UK.) I heard that in Italy the issues were heard as well. I'm curious, how do you get them on the agenda?"
The European Social Forum in Paris (November 12th-16th, 2003) includes a forum on disability. Last year's ESF in Florence attracted tens of thousands of delegates from all over Europe, from women's groups, anti-racist groups, environmentalists, unions, left groups, third world solidarity groups, fair trade groups etc. The anti-capitalist movement in the past has been characterized by an opposition to global capitalism and has often been asked to say what it wants to put in its place. It is now starting to discuss this. Has anyone read Michael Alberts "Parecon" or George Monbiot's "Age of Consent" for example. It is essential in my view that the disability movement puts aside its naval gazing and engages with this movement and these debates. We have the opportunity to engage with others fighting for peace and justice and win them to our cause. In my experience they are ready to listen and learn about our struggles but if we aren't there we won't be heard.
I and some other disabled activists want to attend. We are trying to investigate the access arrangements for the event and organise a delegation from the UK. If you are interested please email me.
