Hi, Folks,
The Seattle meeting is rapidly approaching, and among the achievements that
are within reach for this meeting, none is more important, in my judgement,
than reaching consensus on the formal abstract model that Andy Powell has
articulated, and which is accessible at the following link:
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/dcmi/abstract-model/
This document will be discussed at one or both of the architecture meetings
scheduled in Seattle, and of course we'd like to see a thoughtful
consideration of the document prior to that meeting, especially by and for
those who cannot make it to Seattle.
My reading of the document suggests that it is largely a formalization of
current practice, with the addition of features necessary to help us solve
the problem of linking to external metadata in a consistent way.
I hope that subscribers to this group will read Andy's work carefully, and
that in particular, implementers will evaluate it against their systems and
address the question of whether it fails to accomodate any of their
requirements, or conflicts with their approaches.
We often assume that silence means acceptance, but I hope those who read
Andy's formalism and agree with it will voice their agreement. Its long
past time we wrapped this up.
