I am appealing to those who already have a 'corporate' RM
programme/provision in place.
In the light of FOI RM has been given the recognition it so richly deserves
(!) but this means that the service provision is moving from backroom to
frontline. The function of Cumbria Records Centre has been limited in
growth and influence in the 20+ years it has been in existence. The
advantages and principles of RM have been well trumpeted to those who want
to hear with very limited corporate take-up. Of course there are a couple
of examples of best practice across the county but this does not really
hold any water with more centralised departments.
The on-set of FOI has forced the County to look at the way it manages
records in all formats and this has meant suddenly the spotlight has been
turned on the RMU to provide both a policy and strategy for implementing
corporate records management.
Seeing as this is very much a step into the unknown I would like to hear
from authorities with some experience of an operational RM package.
Basically I would like views on what (realistically) the next steps should
be within an authority that by and large has no idea what it holds and what
it is used for? We have a draft policy.
many thanks
