[With apologies to everyone in the above group - the message below went out
direct to you instead of to the RMS with a copy to you, which was my
intention. I think I need some training in e-mail management...]
Dear all,
I write to let all RMS members know about the Higher and Further Education
(HE/FE) Records Management Group. This group was formed in 2002 as a forum
for discussion of matters of mutual interest and concern to all persons
working in the HE/FE sector with responsibility for managing records,
particularly in relation to the
Data Protection Act 1998 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The group meets regularly to talk about specific areas of interest; topics
to date have included records retention schedules, the records life cycle,
FOI compliance, and academic records and intellectual property rights. Our
next meeting, on September 18th at Bath University, will concentrate on
electronic records management.
The group also manages a listserv and a website. The latter is accessible
at http://internal.bath.ac.uk/records-mgmnt/urmgroup/. The site contains
details of how to join, minutes of previous meetings, information on DPA and
FOI and copies of retention schedules and records management guidelines and
procedures produced by various universities. To join the listserv, please
e-mail "subscribe UNIVERSITY-RMS" and then your name to

Anyone who has responsibility for records management or who is involved with
it through related work on DPA or FOI is very welcome to join the group. We
are an informal collection of people from a variety of backgrounds and many
of our members have had no formal records management training, but have been
thrown in the deep end by our organisations and told to get on with it.
All this adds spice to our meetings! Contact us through the website or
e-mail the group's officers - Clare Cowling, King's College London
([log in to unmask]), Matt Stephenson, LSE ([log in to unmask])
or Lizzie Richmond, Bath University ([log in to unmask]) for more information.
