medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. July) is the feast day of:
Praxedes (2nd cent.?) There is a church in Rome dedicated to St. Praxedes;
it probably stands on the site of her house. Legend tells that she was a
daughter of the Roman senator St. Pudens, and sister of St. Pudentiana, and
was a consecrated virgin.
Julia of Troyes (d. c. 272) According to legend, Julia was a young woman
of Troyes (Gaul), beheaded with several companions in the reign of
Aurelian.
Victor of Marseilles and companions (d. c. 290) Victor was a Roman army
officer stationed at Marseilles. He and three prison guards he converted
were executed in Marseilles. In the fourth century, John Cassian built the
monastery of St. Victor over their tomb.
Arbogast (d. c. 678) Arbogast was an Aquitainian who became a hermit in
Alsace. He was forced by the Frankish king to become bishop of Strassburg,
in which office he remained humble to the point of ordering that he be
buried in the criminals' graveyard (a church was later built over his
grave). In art he is shown walking on a river.
Oddino Barrotti (blessed) (d. 1400) Oddino was a native of Fossano in the
Piedmont. He became a parish priest and Franciscan tertiary there. But he
resigned and turned his house into a hospital.
