Many thanks to all of you who were kind enough to respond to my request for
info on jigsaw policies. Sorry for the delay in posting this summary.
There was a clear distinction between two camps, most people seemed to be
willing to put up with the generally acknowledged drawbacks of jigsaw
collections, i.e. untidiness, lack of quality control, etc, in order to
satisfy a relatively small but clear need for them. Others had decided to
bite the bullet and disband the collections, having in some cases made
alternate arrangements, i.e. local charities or friends' groups looking
after jigsaws, instead of the library service.
At Luton, we are very much aware of the social inclusion aspects of this
service and will probably continue the jigsaw collections to a certain
extent. We may get rid of them in the central library, where issues are
relatively low, but keep them in some branches and the housebound service.
Once again, thanks for the responses.
