Temporary Lecturer in Italian
A temporary vacancy has arisen in the Italian Department at Trinity
College Dublin during the academic year 2003-2004. The principal
feature of the post will be a variety of language teaching
responsibilities, including intensive grammar and translation
teaching. Other courses will include teaching a modern novel to
first-year students. Further courses will be assigned according to
the needs of the Department and the successful candidate's areas of
expertise.
Essential requirements for the post are a good university degree, a
very high standard of language competence in Italian, an adequate
level of language competence in English, demonstrable ability and
versatility in teaching, a demonstrable interest in research, and
basic computer skills. An interest in innovative teaching methods,
some knowledge
of computer-assisted learning, and relevant postgraduate
qualifications would be desirable, and a qualification in language
learning or applied linguistics would be very welcome.
Salary will be within the range ¤26,227 - ¤37,008 [EUROS] per annum,
at a point to accord with qualifications and experience to date.

Appointment of Lecturer (2003/04)
Applications are invited for a lectureship in the Department of
Italian at Trinity College, Dublin. This is a contract post tenable
from September 2003.
Italian at Trinity College
Trinity College has some 15,000 students spread over six Faculties.
It is situated in the centre of Dublin, with many fine buildings and
a copyright library which houses the largest book collection in
Ireland, including good holdings in Italian. Trinity's Department of
Italian, which dates from 1776, is older than any other in Ireland or
Britain. 160 students study Italian in two four-year degree
programmes: a joint honor degree known as the Two-Subject
Moderatorship, and the recently introduced European Studies degree.
These programmes are described in the current University of Dublin
Calendar, pages J36-J38, and pages K48-K52. Most students start as
beginners in Italian. There are Socrates exchange programmes with
several Italian universities. The Department currently has two Senior
Lecturers, a Lecturer, an Italian Government sponsored Lettrice di
ruolo, and a Language Assistant. Administrative support is provided
by a part-time Executive Officer. In addition, our Emeritus Associate
Professor, Corinna Salvadori Lonergan, continues to make a major
contribution to our teaching and research activities.
Staff teach an average of 9 or 10 hours per week in a 24-week
teaching year; roughly half of this is taken up with language work,
while the other half is concerned with literature and other cultural
or historical topics. Secretarial support is necessarily limited, but
staff members have access to computer equipment for teaching,
administration and research. Recent developments in our course
structure include an increased emphasis on options which students
choose from a list of topics in Italian literature, language and
society; the introduction of computers in language teaching at junior
and senior levels; and the availability of optional courses in
linguistics and film studies.
The new contract post
Present members of staff have particular competence in medieval,
Renaissance and modern literature. We also devote considerable energy
to language teaching at all levels. The new contract lecturer will be
required to take on teaching and co-ordination duties, particularly
relating to the first-year programme (mostly language but also some
modern fiction), and may in addition be able to offer specialist
options for senior students, drawing on personal interests and
expertise. Depending on departmental needs, the lecturer may be
called upon to contribute to any part of the degree programme. In
addition to normal contact hours, staff members provide supervision
for Senior Sophister dissertations and projects. All lecturers are
expected to share in the general administrative work of the
Department. The Department expects a good standard of language
performance from its students, and teaching methods are kept under
constant review. Lecturers are expected to have a native or
near-native level of competence in Italian. There is considerable
expertise in language learning among our colleagues; Trinity teaches
an exceptionally wide range of languages, and the Centre for Language
and Communication Studies provides research and active support in
this field. The College's European Studies programme also places a
strong emphasis on language competence. The Italian Department has a
tradition of open discussion at both formal and informal meetings;
new ideas are welcomed and new colleagues are encouraged to bring
their own perspectives to the development of our courses.
The selection procedure
Candidates shortlisted for interview will be invited to present a
short paper on a research topic and to demonstrate the teaching of a
language topic.
