This learning resource type vocabulary is a big step forward and it is
good to have a chance to comment on it. I cannot comment from the point
of view of RDN/LTSN but I wonder if there is scope for wider agreement
here - could this vocabulary also be agreed by UKCMF? For this to happen
I suspect that it would need to tackle the granularity issues that are
mentioned. Most of the terms proposed for RDN/LTSN are at a fairly high
level of aggregation. I think this arises from the RDN/LTSN definition
of a Learning Resource (compared with a Resource) but since there is
only one field available in the metadata we need to be fairly tolerant
of what can be described in that field. To also make this useful for
UKCMF I would suggest (and these are my personal views only):
The RDN Learning Resource Type Vocabulary (almost entirely), plus
selected terms from the RDN/LTSN Educator Resource Type, and a subset of
the RDN Resource Type (or current LOM Learning Resource Type) should all
be merged into a single vocabulary that can be used for LOM 5.2 Learning
ResourceType or dc:type.
The actual terms to be agreed would probably need detailed discussion
between those who created this RDN/LTSN vocabulary and the UKCMF team.
But in the interests of starting a debate here is my suggestion. I have
not included explanatory notes as they will not always be available and
the terms themselves need to be meaningful and distinguishable to
metadata creators. (I have kept the order from the RDN/LTSN list but I
am not clear about the significance of order in this or any other (LOM)
vocabulary.)
