I think CP has just expressed herself in terms that she might want to
reconsider. After all, she is 'on the side of the angels' in denouncing
a supercilious' attitude.

CP wrote about those who *watch* TT, not the Big Diggers. I agree that
'workingmen's club' is an unfortunate phrase simply due to its
connotations, but the underlying notion is not so far off the mark. This
diffidence over joining anything that might seem to be intellectual is
widespread, but it can lead to very misleading impressions.
For example, I know of a very highly-skilled person who will not join
ISCE (see my .sig) simply through lack of paper qualifications (which he
has been assured are unnecessary in his case). I have friends that fall
into CP's category of no contact with formal instruction after school,
who are heavily into self-teaching and attended an exhibition of 'rocks
and fossils' today (Saturday). Also, yesterday (Saturday!), I had a
discussion of cosmology with a retired friend who was a painter and
decorator. There is a thirst for learning but not for 'being taught'
(from bitter experience of 'being taught'?), and TT and its ilk offer
the knowledge in an easily-digestible form. Of course, it tends to be
knowledge at school level, which is often more distorted to 'simplify'
than can be justified, but TT is far from unique in doing that.
