SOUTH YORKSHIRE COMES TOGETHER TO DISCOVER THE PAST
Students from local colleges will be participating in an archaeology activity this August.
Adults from Rotherham's Rother Valley College and Rotherham College of Arts and
Technology Basic Skills course will be digging, planning, drawing and 'finds processing'
over two weeks at Brodsworth Estate in Doncaster. Working with students from the
Department of Archaeology at University of Sheffield, its a chance for students to
improve their reading, writing and communication skills whilst learning some fascinating
facts about local archaeology. The first dig will be on 12th-14th August, followed by
another from the 19th - 21st.
Colin Merrony, dig director outlined the aims of the activity. He said: "We are working on
the land at Brodsworth Hall, where much archaeology survives. We will look at how the
Romans affected the lives of people in this area, tracing the origins of the village and
finding out about the history of stately homes in the area."
A post dig exhibition is to be organised, with a display of the findings likely to be held at
Rotherham Art Gallery and Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery.
Abi Hackett from Rotherham Borough Council's Clifton Park Museum said:
"This will be a great opportunity for students to have a taste of an archaeological dig. It's
a great chance for Rotherham students to meet Sheffield University Students and local
volunteers in Doncaster. People from across South Yorkshire will be involved in
discovering the past together."
