I have been wondering when someone would hit on the 'truth' of what archaeology is about. Thank you Chris: at last someone with a real understanding of the essence of archaeology. May your God forbid that we forget this!
"to understand human society in the past..." Archaeology is NOT about artefacts, it is about human beings. It is a socio-cultural learning exercise and artefacts are just a part of the data, and ONLY part of the data.
