Today (11. June) is the feast day of:
Barnabas (1st cent.) An early disciple, Barnabus is mostly known as a
companion of Paul on his travels. However, they had a quarrel and Barnabus
ended up going off to evangelize Cyprus. According to legend, he was
martyred at Salamis in 61.
Herebald (8th cent.) A Breton hermit.
Rimbert of Hamburg-Bremen (d. 888) A disciple of St. Ansgar, Rimbert
succeeded A as archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen. He continued A's work as a
missionary in Denmark and Sweden, ransomed captives of Vikings, and wrote
an excellent vita of Ansgar.
Hugh of Marchiennes (d. 1158) Hugh was educated at Rheims. He became a
Benedictine, and was abot of Marchiennes from 1148 until his death.
Aleydis of Schaerbeek (d. 1249) Aleydis became a Cistercian nun near
Brussels. She suffered patiently from grave illnesses, and was a noted
mystic.
