Even though our SMR has only been online for a very short time, the
question of how landowners would react was considered before we went live.
It would appear that landowners up here generally fall into two categories,
the first are completely unaware that such details are available to the
public and are therefore 'quiet' on the subject, the second own land on
which they are already used to having visitors to the sites on it, and when
asked were not concerned. Of course the right of access is different up
here in Scotland, and will be made even easier with the current draft
proposal of the "Scottish Outdoor Access Code", but we have added the
following to the SMR as a form of guidance:
"The majority of sites or buildings in the Sites and Monuments Record are
not open to the public and permission should always be sought from the
landowner or tenant."
