Dear all
You are invited to an evening seminar about the recently published report
from the Commission on the Social Sciences, to find out more about it, and
hear about the implications for social researchers. This Social Research
Association seminar is on Wednesday 30th June 2003 at 5pm, and will be held
at Jurys Hotel, 16-22 Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3NN (round the
corner from the Nuffield Foundation). There is no need to book. Further
details are below.
Great Expectations: The Social Sciences in Britain - Where Next?
Professor David Rhind
Why Great Expectations? Professor David Rhind, the Chair of the Commission
on the Social Sciences says that the title was chosen because many people
have high hopes for what social science can contribute in the 21st century.
Quoting David Blunkett's speech to the ESRC Annual Conference in 2000,
"Social science should be at the heart of policy-making. We need a
revolution in relations between government and the social research community
- we need social scientists to help determine what works and why, and what
type of policy initiatives are likely to be most effective." The
Commission's recently produced report provides a lively and detailed review
of the state and health of the social sciences with a range of
recommendations for government and the research community.
David Rhind's talk will cover how the report came about, what the Commission
has identified as the top priorities for the social sciences in Britain, how
the recommendations are to be taken forward and by whom, and what are the
messages for researchers?
There is no need to book, all you have to do is turn up. The seminar is free
to SRA members, while a small charge of £5 is payable by non-members. The
seminar will take place at Jurys Hotel, 16-22 Great Russell Street, London
WC1B 3NN (nearest tube is Tottenham Court Road: see the following web page
for a map - http://www.jurysdoyle.com/uk/jpguk/gtrussel.htm).
The seminar will start promptly at 5:00pm, followed by drinks in a local bar
at 6.30pm.
The Social Research Association looks forward to welcoming you.
