Ageing in a Disabling Society - British Society of Gerontology Scotland conference 24 June 2003 Iris Murdoch Centre, University of Stirling.
2003 has been designated the European Year of Disabled People (EYDP). EYDP is about raising awareness of the right to full equality and participation in all areas. It is about tackling barriers that people with disabilities face, wherever they occur. Older people are rarely included in disability studies, social policies for disabled people, or debates about disability rights. Thus, it is important when highlighting the rights of disabled people to consider older people.
This conference will examine issues associated with the 'disabling' aspects of society for older people. The conference will begin by considering the many interesting conceptual issues associated with health and disability in later life and the social and medical models of disability. The architects of the innovative Iris Murdoch Centre will explain how creative design can enable people with dementia to overcome barriers in their lives. Participants will be able to experience such design features during their visit to the building. The afternoon workshops will explore developing areas of interest in relation to ageing in a disabling society. The conference will close by debating the myth of 'compression of morbidity.'
Conference fee: £30 BSG members
£40 non member
