medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. May) is the feast day of:
Job (c. 1000 BCE?) Job has a book of the Bible to himself. I refer
interested readers to it; I've always found the story both puzzling and
troubling myself.
Evodius of Antioch (d. c. 64-7) Tradition names Evodius as one of the 72
disciples. He is credited with succeeding Peter as bishop of Antioch, and
is said to have coined the word "Christian."
Marian and James (d. 259) James was a deacon and Marian a lector in Cirta
Iulia (Constantina), Numidia. An anonymous friend of the two martyrs wrote
their Acta, including visions as well as tortures---it is interesting to
note that the two were encouraged by a vision of St. Cyprian, who
encouraged them and gave them pure water to drink. A number of other
Christians were executed at the same time: they were lined up in rows,
blindfolded, then decapitated. the bodies were thrown in the river.
Edbert (d. 698) Edbert was bishop of Lindisfarne 688-98. Bede tells that
he was a priest famous both for his biblical scholarship and his
generosity. Like Cuthbert, he spent each Lent in retreat on a neighboring
island. E's reputation for sanctity seems closely linked to Cuthbert: E
had a new shrine made for Cuthbert and had himself buried in the vacated
tomb. Miracles took place at the tomb, so E. was regarded as a saint and
his relics were eventually removed with those of Cuthbert.
Petronax of Monte Cassino (d. c. 747) Petronax, a native of Brescia, began
to rebuild the ruinous and largely abandoned monastery of Monte Cassino in
717. The few hermits there recognized P. as abbot. P. gradually restored
the monastery, getting Benedict of Nursia's autograph of the Rule from the
pope, and winning support from both secular and religious officials. He is
regarded as the second founder of Monte Cassino.
