As many of you remember at last year's Ad Hoc Committee meeting, a Daily
Disability Negotiations Bulletin was published to much success. Both
government delegations and NGOs used the bulletin to stay on top of
events,
issues and opinions. In interest of continuing this valuable
publication,
Landmine Survivors Network (LSN) and Rehabilitation International (RI)
are
coordinating publication efforts. In preparation for the upcoming
meeting,
contributions in the form of articles for the bulletin would be greatly
appreciated. In addition, any input on editorial content would also be
welcome.
Details as follow:
Call for submissions to the Daily Disability Negotiations Bulletins – a
daily advocacy newsletter to be produced during the meeting of the
second UN
Ad Hoc Committee (June 16-27, 2003), which is considering proposals for
the
development of an international convention on the rights of people with
disabilities.
Theme of This Session’s Bulletins: Disability Rights Are Human Rights
We are asking for submissions of 200 words or less and they will be
edited.
The Daily Bulletins have very limited space; they are currently
four-page
brochures. We are very interested in receiving short articles to
address
thematic topics (see list below). Articles that are not used for the
Bulletins produced at the Ad Hoc Committee meetings in June may be
distributed later on the email list/listserv that will be used to keep
disability organizations and allied organizations informed of
developments
throughout the summer. We would like to represent viewpoints from as
many
different countries as possible. Rather than presenting mere
consciousness-raising stories, our goal in the Daily Bulletins is to
convince members of the country delegations of the need for a
Convention.
Our strategy is to present a global, human rights focus and demonstrate
the
power of the disability rights movement as part of the broad worldwide
struggle for human rights and civil rights.
Individual Bulletin Issues (please note that these are not in any
particular
order):
· Employment
· Education
· Political Access
· Healthcare
· Social and Cultural Recreation (including leisure and sports)
· Access to Information for All (including people with disabilities,
linguistic minorities, etc.)
· Disability and Humanitarian Crises
· Disability and Development
· Disability and Aging
· Disability and Race
· Disability and Gender
· Stereotyping of Groups
· Social Model of Disability vs. Medical Model
· Physical Access and Assistive Technology
Please e-mail your submissions to Elaine Belmear at:

Although submissions will be accepted on an
on-going basis, to accommodate production processes and ensure inclusion
in
the Bulletins please send submissions at your earliest convenience.
