I have contacted many of John Hurst's international friends, especially in
North America and the Low Countries where I have many shared contacts, to
inform them of his sad death. The response has been one of shock and huge
sadness. Invariably people have remembered not only his great scholarship
but also the great friendship and kindness of John to international
colleagues over the years. Many correspondants used the words 'kind man'
to describe him. Indeed it is dificult to imagine european medieval
archaeology without him. Perhaps someone could pass this on to John's
family. It should be remembered that we have lost one of the few British
archaeologists whose reputation was truly international.
