Stupid thing for him to say but politicians are prone to say stupid things - he is obviously totally unaware of what his own government funds - if we took his statement seriously then the implications for Government spending would be truly revolutionary - English Heritage would be destroyed for a start, much of the policy of the Museum sector would be undermined and so on.
So, I think we should not overreact to it - its just a stupid statement by a stupid politician and one which he will regret saying. The fact that he is the Minster for Education makes him a complete prat but I doubt very much whether any medievalists or classicists will be losing their jobs because of it. So, I think the comparison with Thatcherite Education policy is wrong - the schools my children go to are much improved since 1997 and certainly have benefited from extra money.
I remember Tony Banks saying of the Museum of London ("that's all about Kings and Queens isn't it?") but he soon came around when he was told the truth and when he felt it might be useful in the fight to save the GLC.
