Have I missed something? The only incident I recall involving painting
avenue stones at Avebury was an act of wanton vandalism c1997 or 1998 (?)
when black and white gloss paint was used to daub pseudo-ritual/magickal
"runes" on some 6 or 8 stones.
IIRC the clean-up operation could not remove all traces of the paint
because the agents used killed the lichens on the stones. Having examined
those stone again about a month ago, you can still make out the shapes of
the symbols and traces of the black paint (at least) embedded into the
grain of the stone.
