Effective online content development and learner support
A one-day focus group from ALT

Date: 17 June 2003
Time: 09.45 - 15.00
Venue: MDC Learning Systems, Leith, Edinburgh

No cost: Free to ALT members
Booking deadline: 3 June 2003

Overview:
MDC are seeking to introduce the wider elearning community to
our
tools and approaches, and to gauge the reaction of the wider
elearning community. MDC wish to focus on how elearning should
put
the learner first and the building of the online technology second,
to effectively meet the learning needs. All materials developed must
improve instruction and motivate the learner. Software must be
appealing to learners if it is to be effective. Most people are
attracted to the novelty of interactive media initially but if the
learner is not motivated beyond that then their involvement
decreases. You can find out more about what MDC does at
www.mdconline.co.uk

Topics to be covered:
* Capturing learning techniques using engaging interactive media
* Identifying the types of content suitable for online learning
* Developing the skills to capture the teaching and delivery
methods
using the Internet to develop and deliver online courses
* Improving the motivation of the learner
* Mentoring the learner online
* Building the learning environment around the learner

Expected outcomes:
* Improved understanding of how to effectively develop online
material that captures teaching and learning
* Understanding of how to mentor online
* Managing Knowledge online to support the learner
* Integrating online learning with traditional methods

Who should attend:
* Educators responsible for flexible delivery of training and
education
* IT people who are selecting learning management systems
* Those who are involved in the HR and training function who wish
to
make training more flexible and accessible and cost effective

ALT will provide the travel expenses for an ALT member to act as
an
independent expert at the focus group, i.e. take a lead on the
questions and ensure that full and satisfying answers are given and
key issues are discussed thoroughly.

About the presenters:
Jim Robson has been a member of the Fire Service since 1972.
Jim was
appointed principal of the Scottish Fire Service College in 2001.
The
introduction of the Integrated Personnel Development System has
resulted in production of the first 100 development modules,
revolutionising the way people are trained for their role within the
Fire Service. Jim has used these to develop elearning modules
with
MDC Learning Systems, enabling all Fire Service personnel to
access
development, remotely to the traditional teaching environment.

Dr Ken Thomson joined Falkirk College in 1994 as a lecturer in
ecology and conservation management, and was appointed Head
of
Applied Sciences in 2001. In the last year Ken has been involved in
the design, development and implementation of elearning modules
alongside MDC Learning Systems, to complement the teaching
and
learning of the SCBC's educational programmes.
