medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. April) is the feast day of:
Antipas of Pergamum (d. c. 90) Antipas is mentioned in Revelation 2:13.
He was martyred in the reign of Domitian, according to legend by being put
into a bronze bull and then roasted over a slow fire.
Barsanuphius of Gaza (d. c. 540) B. was an Egyptian monk who lived in
complete seclusion for 50 years, communicating only through letters.
Isaac of Spoleto (d. c. 550) Isaac was a Syrian monk who fled monophysite
persecution and resettled in Italy. He founded an eremitical community at
Monteluco near Spoleto.
Guthlac (d. 714) Guthlac was a Mercian of royal blood. He was a soldier,
but gave it up to become a monk and then hermit at Crowland. He lived an
austere life, wrestling with demons, etc. G's cult really got its start
when his tomb was opened a year after his death, and the body was found
incorrupt.
Stanislas of Cracow (d. 1079) Stanislas was of noble family, educated at
Gniezno and perhaps Paris, served as priest and canon, and became bishop of
Cracow in 1072. He was a very active reformer besides caring for the poor
of his diocese. But S. got in a fight with King Boleslas II: legend
reports that the king was unjust and violent, most notably abducting a
nobleman's wife. S. reproved the king and then excommunicated him.
Boleslas was so angry when he went to the cathedral and the services were
stopped that he pursued S. to a chapel outside the city and ordered his
guards to kill S; when the guards failed to do so, the king went in and did
it himself. Then again, S. may have been guilty of a treasonous plot to
depose Boleslas. S. was canonized in 1253.
