medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. April) is the feast day of:
Mark (d. c. 74) The evangelist Mark is usually identified with the John
Mark described in Mark 14:51. He was later companion to both Paul and
Peter. M. is regarded as the first bishop of Alexandria. His relics were
stolen in the ninth century and brought to Venice.
Anianus of Alexandria (1st cent.) According to tradition, Anianus was a
shoemaker, converted by Mark (who cured him of an accidental awl injury).
A. succeeded Mark as bishop of Alexandria.
Kebius (4th cent.) A native of Cornwall, legend reports that Kebius was
consecrated bishop by Hilary of Poitiers, after which he returned to
Cornish lands as a missionary.
Phaebadius of Agen (d. c. 392) Phaebadius was bishop of Agen (southern
Gaul) and a leading churchman of his time. He was noted for his anti-Arian
polemics (one major treatise of his has survived), and presided over
several councils.
Stephen of Antioch (d. 481) Patriarch Stephen of Antioch was attacked by
monophysites, who struck him down before his own altar, then threw the body
into the Orontes.
