SUBJECT CENTRE EVENTS

1. Set Texts? New Approaches To The Teaching Of Literature In Languages
And Related Studies / Area Studies (06 June 2003 - CILT, London)
CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE 30 APRIL 2003

The Subject Centre will be holding a one-day seminar to explore
innovatory approaches to the teaching of literature in or translated
from languages other than English. Particular emphasis will be placed
on the evolving role of literature both as a subject of study in its
own right (e.g. in language and area studies programmes) and as a tool
of study in other disciplines (e.g. business, politics and the
sciences). We would welcome presentations on the following themes:

* Trends in literature teaching in language programmes
* Teaching postcolonial literatures
* Literature as a teaching tool in other disciplines
* Literature and technology
* Out with the old, in with the new. Are 'new literatures' pushing
aside the 'classics'?

Abstracts of no more than 100 words should be sent to Alison Dickens
([log in to unmask]) by 30 April 2003.

2. Hybridity, Contact Zones, Borderlands, Liminal Spaces -
Interdisciplinarity and Inter-Cultural Learning in Area Studies
Curricula (06 May 2003 - CiLT, London)

Places are still available for this event which focuses on the

multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches on Area Studies
Programmes. If you or your colleagues are interested in this event you

Salford) and David Robey (University of Reading) to lead discussions on

pedagogical research and unviersity teaching and learning, the 'New
Landscape for Languages' study conducted for the Nuffield Foundation
and the Collaboration Programme in Modern Languages in Higher
Education. An attendance fee of 20 is payable for this event. Early
