To add to Dan's point about challenging behaviour and people with a learning
disability - how about
anger at injustice and social oppression?
Which is then discounted by label of challenging behaviour.
When you think about it, its this anger that might actually stimulate some
political acts of resistance to oppression, if it is not completely
restrained by psychological and chemical technology.
From a parent's point of view its hard to continually live with an angry
person, but its worth listening to what the anger is about and changing what
you do. Usually the anger is about power imbalances and parents get stuck in
the middle because they are mediating some aspect of 'reality' like money or
legal systems.

To add to Keith's point about challenging behaviour - could I add three more
potential definitions
of challenging behaviour:
- a resistant act to disabling and oppressive institutions
- a social construction created by a whole host of specialist professions -
particularly psychology
- a phenomenon that has kept a lot of professionals and academics in work
Has always struck me how people with learning difficulties are not allowed
to
be 'bad' (whatever that means) without it being given a label of challenging
behaviour.
all the best
