Focus on German Studies
invite abstracts for the
Eighth Annual Focus Graduate Student Conference
held on October 24th and 25th, 2003
at the University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA).
We welcome papers that explore crossing as a metaphor or event, from one
culture to another, across national and/or imagined borders, and across
disciplines. What are the effects and significance of such movements?
How are globalization and multiculturalism changing literature and
culture(s)? What new discourses are emerging?
Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:
Transnational literature – “Ausländerliteratur/Migrantenliteratur” –
Turkish-German literature – German/Austrian-Jewish literature – East-West
– diasporas – travel literature – exile – representation of minorities
– subcultures – bridges between cultures – interdisciplinary studies –-
real and imagined border crossings – immigration and migration
–globalization – multiculturalism – linguistic changes – translation –
identity – cosmopolitanism – mother tongue/accent – memory
One page abstracts should be submitted as an MSWord email attachment by
May 30th, 2003.
Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in
Focus on German Studies 11 (2004).
