Hi all,
My name si Peter Gibilisco; I have Friedrich's Ataxia and are a PhD
student in the dep't Political science, University of Melbourne.
I am in my 3rd year and getting close to completion, but any help on any
question will bring me just that bit closer.
In short this thesis will look to such matters, which believe the new
political economic strategies, such as the third way, promise economic
freedom, which is driven by the political economic procedures outlined in
neo-liberalism. Russell is of the opinion such a political economic
strategy enforces the notion of a priority towards profit making.
Therefore, Russell believes there is no room to accommodate people with
disabilities under market tyranny. Neo-liberalism broadly speaking
prescribes an environment, where business people would find adjusting a
job function to suit the function of a disabled worker to impeding on the
overall procedure profit making. Rather, than recognising the collective
social purposes of traditional social democracy to allow people with
disabilities (today) to enjoy prescribed measures of social empowerment.
Disability and employment
How would you characterize the employment experiences of people with
disabilities? Is it possible to make any such general characterization?
What social and political factors contribute to these employment
experiences?
How would you characterize employment opportunities for people with
disabilities?
Are employment opportunities structured differently for people with
disabilities, and if so, how?
Do stereotypes of, or stigmas associated with, people with disabilities
impact on their employment experiences and opportunities? If so, can you
give some examples? Are such stereotypes or stigma changing?
What responsibilities, if any, should governments have in providing
employment for people with disabilities? Should governments have an
obligation to be an employer of last resort (independent of sheltered
workshops)?
What responsibilities, if any, should employers have in providing
employment for people with disabilities?
Who is/should be responsible for providing funding related to the issues
such as access to the workplace (eg transport; building infrastructure,
employment services)?
Which political actors, if any, have been most significant in
influencing employment experiences and opportunities for people with
disabilities (eg political parties, social movements)?
Is there any noticeable difference in the approach of the major
political parties to this issue?
Are there any particular ideas that you think have driven policy in this
area, for example, notions of social justice or social inclusion?
Have affirmative action programs or equal opportunity programs had any
impact on employment experiences and opportunities for people with
disabilities?
Have other policy processes influenced the employment experiences and
opportunities for people with disabilities?
What is your overall perception of the employment experiences of people
with disabilities?
Disability and higher education
What role does higher education play in the lives of people with
disabilities? How has this changed over time?
Is higher education for people with disabilities a positive force in
helping to breakdown stigma and discrimination?
Do you think affirmative action in higher education for people with
disabilities has effectively helped their pursuits, in particular in
seeking paid employment?
Good friends and family today will see me studying so hard and shrug
their shoulders and say 'well at least it keeps you busy'. Can higher
education for people with disabilities ever be seen as more than an end in
itself, and rather as a means to an end?
What organisational processes have been set up within universities to
meet the needs of people with disabilities? How effective have such
processes been?
Do alternative assessment examinations reduce the integrity of a degree
for people with disabilities, especially when facing a prospective
employer?
Are there enough accessible guidance programs for people with
disabilities in higher education?
What policies have been developed in the higher education sector to meet
the needs of people with disabilities? How effective have such policies
been?
Where have the ideas for such policies come from? Have any particular
political parties or social movements been instrumental in getting ideas
about disability and higher education onto the policy table?
Have any specific ideas been noticeable for their impact in this area,
for example, around social justice or social inclusion?
What resources have been targeted in the higher education sector to the
needs of people with disabilities? What more could be done?
