As you may be aware (and this pertains to Australia - not sure about terms
in other countries) that the terminology used in mental health services is
"co-morbidity". I am not certain whether this term is used in reference to
people with a mental illness and a developmental disability? If it is, then
this may be a topic for discussion referring to the implied morbidity or
illness of developmental disability.
Your example of "fitting into more than one category" (below) where you
cite Mental health problems and drug and alcohol abuse is interesting. It
might depend on the definitions used in various studies. The Study into the
Mental Health of Australian Adults conducted by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics (1998), substance use disorders are defined as a category of
mental illness in themselves. Therefore, a combination of an affective
disorder with a substance use disorder is referred to as "co-morbidity" (as
one example).

Subject: dual diagnosis - learning disabilities and mental illness
| Anyone out there who can help?
|
| I have been volunteered to give a talk on 'dual diagnosis' relating to
| learning disabilities and mental illness and would like to present a
social
| model perspective. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts or references on
| the use of 'dual diagnosis' as a way of describing people who get fitted
| into more than one category e.g mental health problems and drug/alcohol
| abuse or more general ideas about the experiences people with learning
| disabilities have of mental health problems and mental health services.
|
| Thanks!
