Hello everyone,
our Roads dept. is rechanneling a burn in a local park as part of a
flood prevention scheme and environmental improvement. A long
time ago (time unknown) workers from Scottish Water that were
digging near the Burn received burns from isocyanide. It is thought
that this originated from hospital waste from the launderies. At this
time the hospital apparently discharged waste water into the Burn.
The Roads dept. want to carry out a site investigation prior to
works commencing to assess the current risk to construction
workers. As well as the hospital it is known that other industries
discharged into the burn water, although it's not currently known
which industries those were or what potential contaminants may
have caused contamination of the ground and soils. Can anyone
advise what other sorts of waste products may have discharged
into watercoureses from a hospital?
Many thanks
Clare
