medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. March) is the feast day of:
Euphrasia of Constantinople (d. c. 420) Euphrasia was related to Emperor
Theodosius I. Her father died when she was six years old, and her mother
moved with E. to a family estate in Egypt, near a large and severe convent.
The very next year, E. joined the community, proving her resolve with
great acts of humility and miracles before her death at age thirty.
Ramirus and companions (d. c. 554 or c. 630) These are monks of Leon
(Spain), victims of Arian Visigothic persecution. Two days after their
abbot (St. Vincent) was martyred, Prior Ramirus and all his monks were
massacred in their church---while chanting the Nicene Creed (no wonder the
Arians were mad at them!)
Gerald of Mayo (d. 732) Gerald was an Englishman. He became a monk at
Lindisfarne and apparently moved with St. Colman to Inishbofin. There he
became abbot of the English part of the new monastery Colman founded, which
came to be called "Mayo of the Saxons." Mayo became an important study
center. Gerald is also thought to have founded two other monasteries in
Ireland.
Rodriguez and Solomon (d. 857) This is a good story of the sort of brother
to avoid. Rodriguez was a priest near Cordoba. One of his brothers became
a Muslim. Not content with his own conversion, one day when Rodriguez
tried to break up a fight, the Muslim brother beat R unconscious, then had
him carried through the streets, loudly proclaiming that R. had converted
to Islam. As soon as R. could move he escaped, but then the brother
denounced him as an apostate to the kadi. Despite protests that there had
never been a conversion, the kadi believed the brother and imprisoned R.
In prison, R. met Solomon, another Christian in a similar predicament. The
two were left in prison a long time, in the hope that they would see the
light and give up their "apostasy" from Islam---then they were condemned
and beheaded.
